I have a confession to make: a lot of the advice surrounding branding and creating a brand, I used to think was foolish.

I didn’t understand how important all the groundwork behind the visuals were; that visuals, products, services, etc. won’t make the impact that you truly want them to if you don’t know why you’re doing all of this.

Knowing This One Thing Will Make Your Brand Stronger

Knowing your why is the #1 thing that will make and keep your brand strong.

Think about it: if you dont know your why, then what’s the point of putting yourself through all of this?

Yes, I know that underneath it all our “why” includes making money. No one is denying that. But at some point, you will make the amount of money that you want. Once you hit that point, why continue?

I was listening to The Lively Show with Jess Lively and she was interviewing Brooke Castillo; she said that after making a certain amount of money, she didn’t feel much different.

I believe that money creates space for more opportunities to find and participate in the things that make you happy; but it’s the actual things that give you happiness, not the money.

So since making money will one day stop being the driving force that makes you want to get up in the morning and get to work, so why are you doing this?

What’s the point?

This is where your why comes in. When the burnout and the money plateaus start, when the comparison games start, when the self-doubt starts: your why helps guide you through all of that.

 

Here’s why knowing your why will not only keep you going but will keep your brand unique and help you grow stronger:

 

It keeps you motivated:

I think it’s safe to say that we all had a moment of unsureness when we first started our businesses.

“Why would someone hire me when there are so many more qualified people? What about my skills make me unique enough to do this?”

Once I sat down and truly thought about my why, I thought about my mom. I thought about other strong women that I knew that were dedicated to creating the best lives for themselves and their families.

I thought of the women that didn’t follow their dreams because of fear. That’s a huge part of my why.

Knowing your why will 100% keep you motivated. Entrepreneurship is just as much of a mind game as it is doing actual work. If your mind isn’t aligned and you aren’t emotionally ready to keep going even when things are slow and rough, it can be hard to remember why you started this in the first place.

It’s so easy for things that to get lost in the struggle of marketing, client work, our personal lives, etc. I think a lot of people lose their why when they’re focused on that “hustle all the time” mindset.

Helps make better biz decisions

Knowing your why can help steer your business decisions and keep you on track towards your ultimate goal. We all get distracted by the shiny object syndrome, and being creative means new ideas come at the most randomest times. Knowing why you’re running your business and keeping your ideal client’s needs in mind helps you weed out ideas that are just shiny with no substance to them, or ideas that could potentially turn into something great.

Being clear on your why also helps you decide on what client projects to take on and which ones you need to decline. Potential clients are going to come inquiring, and being clear on why you’re in business, why you’re not in business and what you don’t want to do, and where you’re going with your biz will help make the decision process clear as day. You don’t have to work with every single person that inquires, and you honestly shouldn’t.

 

Sends the right message to clients and the world:

Knowing your why and keeping that in mind when you write any form of copy or speak to your target audience will always keep your messaging on point. When you speak genuinely with the hopes of helping others, your messaging will speak to the right ones. This makes writing your blog posts, sales copy, website copy, etc flow so much easier because you’re in tune and aligned with those that you’re passionate to serve.

The great thing about being clear on your why is that it’s not about you. It’s about the people you want to serve, and this can help getting through tough times easier. No matter how saturated you think your market is, no one out there is just like you. Your why makes you unique and helps you stand out in your own way.

  2. How do you inspire people?
  3. Think of your personality. What makes you unique?
  4. What are you most passionate about?
  5. How do you define success for you?
